Green SOLUTIONS

ABC’s sustainable metal roof and wall panels are durable and provide a long life expectancy that benefits both building owners and the environment by lowering the demand to produce replacement systems.

Many opportunities exist in both new construction and renovation to provide a more energy efficient building. Green building has been, and continues to be, a significant and exciting development in the construction industry and as technologies advance ABC continually strives to be at the fore front.

Cool metal roofing offers energy savings from both economical and environmental standpoints from reduced HVAC operating costs. ABC’s metal roofs are energy efficient, sustainable, recyclable, durable, lightweight and cost effective. Our panels are made from 25-35 percent recycled materials and the steel is 100 percent recyclable.

In our industry, The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) has emerged as the leading source for environmental standards.  LEED’s Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performances. Many of our products contribute towards LEED credits

There are several authoritative organizations that help determine the value of Green and its components such as reflectivity and emissivity.  Please click on one of the following resources for further information.

Why Build Green?

Buildings are becoming a large target for consumption-saving initiatives. This is similar to how motor vehicles have been assessed for the last 30 years. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), commercial buildings account for 18 percent of total energy consumption. Energy costs represent 30 percent of a typical building’s annual budget and are the single largest operating cost.

ABC’s metal is durable with a long life expectancy that benefits both building owners and the environment by lowering the demand to produce replacement systems. Green building is a good idea and good for business with both social and monetary benefits.

With the proper design, cool roofs save energy by reducing a building’s heating/cooling responsibilities. Many electric facilities offer rebates for cool roofing materials to help save energy and reduce peak demand. Because ABC’s metal roofing systems are coated with infrared reflective Cool Roof finishes, much of the sun’s infrared radiation is reflected, offering energy savings, including significant reductions in HVAC costs.

Long-term effects are also prevalent when building green. Cool metal roofing can help to mitigate the “urban heat island” effect by reducing the demand on utilities for electricity generated by the burning of fossil fuels. A heat island is a dark surface with little or no vegetation to provide shade and cool the air that absorbs more heat from the sun than other surfaces. Heat islands are one of the main environmental concerns.

Understanding Green

The three major drivers behind the green movement include environmental, economic, and health and community benefits.
  • Environmental: Enhances and protects ecosystems and biodiversity by improving air and water quality, reducing solid waste and conserving natural resources.
  • Economic: Reducing operating costs, enhancing asset value and profits, improving employee productivity and satisfaction and optimizing life-cycle economic performance.
  • Health and Community: Improving air, thermal and acoustic environments, enhancing occupant comfort and health, minimizing strain on local infrastructure and contributing to the overall quality of life.
The DOE reports that buildings account for 40 percent of all energy consumed in the U.S., 71 percent of electricity, 38 percent of carbon dioxide emissions and 36 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions.

Green building has many advantages. According to McGraw Hill, some of the perceived business advantages include the following:
  • Decreased operating costs from 8 to 9 percent
  • Increase in building value by 7.5 percent
  • ROI improvement of 6.6 percent
  • Increase in occupancy ratio by 3.5 percent
  • Increase in rent ratio by 3 percent
