WAINSCOTE AND BASE CONDITION RECOMMENDATIONS
American Building Components and the major domestic steel mills recommend that steel roofing and siding panels not be exposed to standing water. Panels subjected to standing water may exhibit cosmetic rust staining, premature corrosion, or harm to the paint coating.
Wainscote and base conditions are conducive to exposing the panel to standing water. American Building components offers the following recommendations to address this issue:
1. The bottom edge of wall panels, in both wainscote and base conditions, should not rest directly on the horizontal surface of the wainscote or base trim. Rather, the panel should be spaced 1/4” from the horizontal trim surface. This will keep the panel’s cut edge out of most of the standing water.
2. Use a wainscote trim that has a slope of 5° or so, rather than horizontal. American Building Components now offers a wainscote trim, part number LG 170, for this application.
