RESIDENTIAL: TERMINOLOGY


Accepted Standard Industry Terminology for ABC metal residential roofing and siding panel systems.

Chimney – a hollow vertical structure, usually made of brick or steel, that allows gas, smoke, or steam from a fire or furnace to escape into the atmosphere.

Cricket – A peaked saddle construction at the back of a chimney to prevent accumulation of snow and ice and to deflect water around the chimney

Eave – The line formed by the intersection of the roof and sidewall.

Endwall – Roof condition where the end of the building connects to the lower roof.

Gable – A triangular portion of the endwall of a building directly under the sloping roof and above the eave line.

High Side Transition – Roof condition when it transitions to another roof pitch.

Hip – A roof which rises by inclined planes from two or more sides of the building.

Rake – The intersection of the roof and wall at the gable end.

Ridge – Highest point of the roof of the building which describes a horizontal line running the length of the building.

Sidewall – Roof condition where the wall connects to the lower roof.

Valley – The internal angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes.
